New Autism program brings schooling home

For years, families of Autistic students who couldn’t attend mainstream classrooms have faced an impossible choice: enrol in programs that don’t meet their child’s needs, or cobble together learning at home with limited support.

High-quality distance education tailored for neurodivergent learners has been notoriously hard to access, leaving many children disengaged, isolated or falling behind.

But for South Australian families, that gap is finally closing.

The Aspect Distance Education offering, which will be available to students in Years 3 to 6 from Term 2, 2026, will provide Autism-diagnosed students with a fully supported, flexible learning pathway designed to meet students where they are — and help them thrive.

Kaye Perry, Principal, Aspect Treetop School said every child learns differently, and for some children on the autism spectrum, a home-based program can make all the difference.

“We’re proud to offer high-quality, autism-specific education that meets each student where they are,” Perry said in a statement. “Our Distance Education program will blend live online lessons with flexible, individualised learning plans, supported by our experienced teachers and allied health team.”

The class will feature a high teacher-to-student ratio, with both a teacher and teacher’s aide supporting daily learning. Families are also supported through regular one-on-one check-ins, access to Aspect’s Learning Support Team (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and social work), and optional Connection Days at the main Treetop campus for social and educational experiences.

The program is ideal for students who have a formal autism diagnosis, live in regional or remote areas, or experience challenges attending traditional school settings.

“Not every child thrives in a busy classroom, and that’s something we deeply understand,” Perry said. “This program gives students another pathway to learn and grow, with the same understanding and expertise Aspect is known for.”
