  • White card stock, index or greeting cards
  • Wipes for hands or nearby sink
  • Ink pads in various colors

Fingerprint art steps:

  1. Cover your work area with newspaper or another type of paper to protect it. You can also use a tray to hold your supplies.
  2. Place various colors of ink pads nearby.
  3. Decide if you will be creating a keepsake for parents, a greeting card, a writing assignment, or something else. Place the needed papers in a stack beside the ink pads.
  4. Be sure to have disposable wipes or a sink nearby so students can clean their hands when they finish.

Tips and Tricks

It’s important to think about how you want to use the fingerprint crafts before you begin. These make fantastic gifts for parents, administration, parent volunteers, and other school staff members who have helped your students throughout the year.

The possibilities are endless, but we’ve included some of our favorites here.

You may want to consider a topic that you have recently taught. Have you studied farm animals lately? You can add those to the top of a piece of writing paper and then let students write about the unit.

Demonstrate how kids will press their thumb or finger down in the ink pad and then carefully press it down on the paper before lifting it straight up. You will want to model how to keep the paper still and flat while you raise the other hand. Give the ink time to dry before you add the features or additional designs.
