Spanish-language radio in Latino communities faces ongoing issues with misinformation, which is difficult to monitor. The AI-powered app VERDAD (“Truth” in Spanish) streamlines this process by identifying and translating radio misinformation into English. Developed by journalist Martina Guzman at Wayne State University, VERDAD launched last year with support from California-based AI experts.
Users can filter by language, station, state, misinformation topics, and political stance. Health and political misinformation are particularly common, sometimes fueled by foreign sources like Russia’s Sputnik. Nonprofits such as Factchequeado play a watchdog role, but VERDAD helps journalists, researchers, and listeners detect false content efficiently.
Radio remains vital in Latino communities, making real-time tools like VERDAD essential. Experts hope it encourages broadcasters and sponsors to address content fraud. Guzman continues refining the app, believing it will promote more responsible media coverage for Latinos.
