Back to School Appeal raises $1.3m for needy kids

The cost-of-living crisis hasn’t stopped Aussies from digging deep to support needy kids, with the annual Back to School Appeal – an initiative by The Smith Family in partnership with Officeworks – raising a whopping $1.3m.

Over the 12-year partnership, the Appeal has transformed the lives of over 60,000 students impacted by poverty and raised more than $9m for The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, thanks to the generosity of Officeworks customers and team members.

“Across Australia, there remains a significant gap in education standards between students who are living in disadvantaged circumstances and those who are not,” Officeworks Community Manager Zoe Cairns told The Educator.

“At Officeworks, we are committed to promoting strong educational outcomes for all Australian students, no matter their circumstances and believe that every child should have equal access to a quality education.”

Cairns said Officeworks is uniquely placed to support Australian children to access vital literacy programs and the tools they need to learn, alongside the organisation’s valued charity partners like The Smith Family.

“Strong partnerships between businesses, charities, and schools play a vital role in breaking down barriers to education and bridging the gap for students facing disadvantage, ensuring they have access to the resources they need to thrive,” she said.

Cairns said retailers bring scale, reach, and logistical expertise.

“Charities offer deep community connections and targeted support; and schools provide firsthand insight into the needs of their students,” she said.

“By working together, we can make a real difference —breaking the cycle of disadvantage and fostering stronger, more resilient communities.”

Cairns said Officeworks is proud to play its part in helping students thrive and ensuring that education remains accessible to all.

“We’re proud that our Back to School Appeal contributes to The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, working to ensure that every child has the tools they need to learn, grow, and thrive.”

Doug Taylor, CEO of The Smith Family, expressed gratitude for the enduring partnership.

“Education is the foundation of opportunity, and together, we’re ensuring that no child is left behind due to circumstances beyond their control,” Taylor said.

“Thanks to the support of partners like Officeworks, we’re not just providing school supplies—we’re unlocking potential and creating brighter futures for students in need.”
